Chapter Seventeen

Brandon’s last comment kept him smiling all morning. Even as he endured the pointed questions

of the Lab Manager, he smiled. Between Friday’s depression and Monday’s elation the man was

muttering “manic-depressive” and “drug tests” as he cut Nick loose on his assignments. Baron’s

casino was set for inspection. Serendipity; Nick got to do his job and dig a little at the same time.

That alone would have kept him from actually calling in sick. It was all good.

Baron’s was an older casino, a locals’ place... probably the first true locals’ place. Off the strip

on the wrong side of the freeway, she offered good odds and penny slots. The casino ceiling was

slightly domed and the decor Victorian with polished brass, marble, and wood trim dominating.

Soft amber glass chandeliers dangled from insets tiled in warm tin and trimmed in mahogany.

Dizzying patterns of navy, gold and red swirled across the carpet. It was meant to recreate the

ambience of the turn of the century cattle baron’s estate. Nick guessed they succeeded, although

he had no clue what a cattle baron’s estate would have looked like.

It was far from their humble beginnings in the seventies as a crummy hotel with a few slots and

four table games. Throughout the decades they’d expanded the casino, added rooms and brought

in high-class dining. Their habit of developing and marketing their own innovative games

spawned trends in the industry that quickly became Vegas staples of play. Baron’s was the

cornerstone of a gambling empire spreading across the US. Hell, one of their casinos had its own

reality show.

The makeup of casino floors had gone through a rapid-fire evolution in the space of twenty

years. One of the biggest changes was the domination of slots. In the old days, most of the

casino’s revenues came from blackjack, craps and roulette. In a modern casino more than 70

percent of revenue was generated by electronic games. That held true at Baron’s. Their floor held

almost two thousand and five hundred slot machines, a small island of table games, and an

enormous bingo room. Banks of slots and video poker, four deep, were lined up airline style:

stacked row after row after row along the walls. Ringing bells, electronic muzak, the rain of

coins into trays; Baron’s casino virtually crackled with excitement. Nick’s nerves were jangling

two minutes after he walked thorough the doors.

The movies had it right, except for one thing. In a casino, the dealers kept their eyes on the table.

Players kept their eyes on the dealer. The floorman monitored the dealer and players, and the

shift boss scrutinized the floormen, the dealers, and the players. Security guards studied everyone

and their kid brother. Surveillance, through the eye in the sky, observed the dealers and players

and the floormen and the shift bosses and security, as well as the maintenance men, change girls,

and any one else who might wander onto the floor.

Gaming Control watched them all. At any time, a sting could be in progress against the card

counter or slot cheat. But it might be the lax dealer, pit boss and floorman who were stung by an

enforcement card team cheating the hell out of the table.
